Stage 1 is the formation of a disk on the surface of the water, known as a dark spot. Stage 2 is a spiral pattern on the water surface. Stage 3 is a formation of a spray ring. Stage 4 is where the waterspout becomes a visible funnel: the waterspout!

Although waterspouts are usually weaker than tornadoes, they can still produce significant damage to you and your boat.

Watch the sky for certain types of clouds. In the summer, with light winds, look for a possible waterspout underneath a line of cumulus clouds with dark, flat bases. Anytime of the year, a thunderstorm or line of thunderstorms, can produce very intense waterspouts.

A waterspout is a whirling column of air and water mist. Some can be just as dangerous as tornadoes. Waterspouts fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts. Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water.

Within 12 miles of a marine location, a very low likelihood (2% to 5% probability) of a tornadic waterspout. See description below. AND/OR...a low likelihood (6% to 15% probability) of a waterspout.

Look for the weather signs Dark spots on the water, followed by rings or a sudden shift in wind can be warning signs of a developing waterspout. Look for the telltale signs in the line of flat bottom cumulus clouds or thunderstorms, or in the lines of thunderstorms that can develop any time of year.

Very strong winds with speeds of more than 100 miles per hour are certainly possible, and the waves they can generate could capsize even larger vessels. If they move over land, damage can be extreme and even fatalities can occur.
