The 3 Kinds of Debtors (and How to Work With Them)

A Debtor is one of the major terms of accounting. A debtor is a person or an entity that owes money to another, which could be any individual or institution (including the government). In most cases, the debtor has to pay interest on debt along with the principal debt.

For example, consider a common scenario where companies centralize their payment activity through a single entity. The entity will be the debtor, but the companies on whose behalf the payments are being made will be the ultimate debtors.

The SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) is the Pan European Credit Transfer scheme that's replaced domestic and cross border Euro Credit Transfers (CT) throughout the SEPA zone. It provides a consistent approach for making payments across Europe and makes these as easy to effect and receive as domestic ACH transactions.

'Debtor' refers not only to a goods and services client but also to someone who borrowed money from a bank or lender. For example, if you take a loan to buy your house, then you are a debtor in the sense of borrower, while the bank holding your mortgage is considered to be the creditor.

Pain. 001 is a payments initiation message by ISO 20022 that depicts a Credit Transfer message in XML format.

ISO definition: The ultimate party to which an amount of money is due. The ultimate creditor could be the same as creditor or it could be different, such as the seller. Ultimate Debtor. ISO definition: The ultimate party that owes an amount of money to the (ultimate) creditor, such as the buyer of services or goods.
