The easiest way to apply for a residence permit is to apply online. An online application goes directly to the Swedish Migration Agency. If you are unable to apply online, please ask your family members in Sweden to fill out the electronic application form, attach copies of documents and pay any application fee.

In exceptional cases, a close relative, who is not or will not become your spouse or live-in partner, can get a residence permit to live with you in Sweden. You must then have a permanent residence permit.

When you have resided in Sweden with a right of residence for at least five years, you have a permanent right of residence. This also applies to family members of EU/EEA citizens who have had a right of residence for five years. (It is then referred to as a permanent residence card).

Children under 18 years must apply on a special form called Application for residence permit for a child under the age of 18 years to settle in Sweden MIGR 162011. (NOTE! EU/EEA citizens, relatives of Swiss citizens, long term resident in another EU/EEA country and their relatives must use a different form.)

A child will become a Swedish citizen at birth, no matter where they are born, as long as one of the parents is a Swedish citizen. a deceased parent to the child was a Swedish citizen upon their death.

Documents required by all applicants A valid passport. If you are not applying online, you need the form Application for residence permit to settle in Sweden, form no. 161011, and the form Family details, no. 239011. See heading below for information about children.
