Excellent quality photo prints require a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). Therefore, an image file should ideally measure at least 1200 pixels by 1800 pixels to print an excellent quality 4x6 print. This is because 4 inches x 300 dpi = 1200 pixels and 6 inches x 300 dpi = 1800 pixels.

Recommended minimum resolution for printing is 300 DPI; computer monitors generally have a display setting of 72 DPI or 96 DPI. If we indicate that some of your images have low resolution, they may not look bad on your monitor but will likely print blurry or jagged.

EXAMPLE OF A LOW RESOLUTION FILE This is an example of a 4" x 6" postcard or flyer with low resolution (72 dpi). Notice that all the text and graphics look blurry, fuzzy, and pixelated. There is no process with printing that will make this look good. Your print will come out as bad as it looks on your screen.

What is a high resolution image? A high resolution image is one that's at least 300 DPI, or "dots per inch." As in – the printer spits out 300 little dots of ink for every inch of your photograph.

(this means for a 24 x 36 poster, your original file should be at 300 dpi and 6 x 9). This applies to photographs and bitmaps. Designs with text such as presentations and signs need a minimum of 150 dpi at actual size up to 300 dpi at actual size.

So the higher the DPI, the more detail and clarity will be present in an image. For example, if you have two images with different resolutions – one at 72 dpi and another at 300 dpi – then the 300 dpi image will appear much sharper than its lower-resolution counterpart due to its increased level of detail.

Low Resolution Images Images used on the internet are typically 72 dpi. This is a suitable resolution for websites since it enables a small file size and does not look visibly pixelated on most computer screens. However, images at 72 dpi will ALWAYS look pixelated and low-resolution when printed.

This means if an image is 10 inches in width by 10 inches in height at 300 DPI, your pixel dimensions need to be 3000px x 3000px. In other words, you need to multiply the print size (width and height in inches) by 300 to find the right pixel dimensions (e.g. 3000px x 3000px) to provide 300 DPI.
