The three most common types of charter contracts are the voyage charter, the time charter, and the demise (or bareboat) charter.

So the shipowner and charterers agree on the factors like allowed number of days for loading and discharging. In chartering terms this is called “Laydays” or “Laytime”. The laydays is mentioned in the voyage charter party agreement between ship owner and charterer.

Laytime is time allowed to a vessel for loading and discharge of cargo, whereas demurrage is compensation for failure to load or discharge the vessel within laytime.

Time Charter: Laytime and demurrage provisions are typically not applicable in time charters. Instead, the charterer is responsible for managing the vessel's time in port and may incur additional costs if the vessel is off-hire due to delays caused by the charterer's actions or inactions.

Laydays. Laydays can be defined as the days kept aside in a ship's voyage schedule for loading and unloading of the cargo. Laydays represent the time at which a ship must reach the charterer for cargo operations. Laydays are decided on the basis of the type and amount of cargo.

Laytime is defined in Voyage Charter party Laytime Interpretation Rules 1993 as “the period of time agreed between the parties during which the owners will make and keep the vessel available for loading or discharging without payment additional to the freight”.
