How long does it take for a permit to be approved? Residential Construction Permits require an average of 14 working days for approval or response. Additional approvals from other departments are also required to issue a permit. Commercial Construction Permits require an average of 28 working days for approval.

Once a permit is issued, it remains valid as long as work begins within 180 days from the date issued and continues in a substantial manner until completion of the job (per FBC 105.3. 2.1).

Information you will be asked for includes: Property identification information, explanation of what work will be done on the property, the overall value of the work that will be done, as well as the category of permit you need.

If the permit has expired you may apply for a One-Time Permit Renewal if it is within 90 days from permit expiration. One-time Permit Renewals are issued over the counter at the Building Administration Office. Upon approval, your permit will be renewed another 180 days.

Once a permit is issued, you have six months to start construction; however, you may request a six-month extension. If construction has not started within that additional six months, the permit expires and a new permit must be submitted and approved by all necessary Departments.
