Learner's permits are generally not renewable. Before your learner's permit expires, you may either take your road test and upgrade your permit to a driver's license, or apply for a new learner permit and start the process over. Either way, you'll have to visit the DMV.

Extend Your Learner's Permit A Learner's Permit extension is issued to an individual whose Learner's Permit has expired or who has failed his or her skills test three times. An extension is valid for 1 year from the date of issuance.

How long do I have to complete my project? Work must be started within 1 year after issuance of the permit. Upon application submitted before the expiration, the building inspector may grant an extension of up to one year as long as the ordinance provisions permitting that type of construction have not changed.
