A measurable currency system started in 16th century, when Sher Shah Suri started a Rupiya system. He issued copper pieces as currencies and silver coins named Rupiya. One silver coin was equivalent to 40 copper coins. Even after the fall of the reign, the money system remained the same until British took over India.

The immediate precursor of the rupee is the rūpiya—the silver coin weighing 178 grains minted in northern India, first by Sher Shah Suri during his brief rule between 1540 and 1545, and later adopted and standardized by the Mughal Empire.

It owes its origin to rupiya, issued by Sher Shah Suri in 1540-45. Today, the Reserve Bank of India issues currency under the RBI Act 1934. ET traces the history of rupee from the British era to now.

The Paper Currency Act of 1861 gave the British government the monopoly to issue notes in India. The series comprised the first British India notes—Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 1,000.

The term currency refers to the tangible form of money that is paper bills and coins. It's used as a medium of exchange that's accepted at face value for products and services as well as for savings and the payment of debt.

Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning first introduced paper currency in Indian subcontinent in 1861 officially. India has a rich tradition of financial instruments and hundi.

The first paper currency note, i.e. the 10 rupees' note was introduced by the Government of India in the year 1861. In the following years, many notes of different denominations were introduced. All these notes were issued by the Government of India.
