Inventor and Scientist In 1876, at the age of 29, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. In 1877, he formed the Bell Telephone Company, and in the same year married Mabel Hubbard and embarked on a yearlong honeymoon in Europe.

The first telephone had two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter comprised three parts—a drumlike device (a cylinder with a covered end), a needle, and a battery. The covered end of the drumlike device was attached to the needle.

The needle was connected by wire to the battery, and the battery was connected by wire to a receiver. When Bell spoke into the open end of the drumlike device, his voice made the paper and needle vibrate. The vibrations were then converted into an electric current which traveled along the wire to the receiver.

It was through his work with the deaf and his careful study of how sound is transmitted via the human voice that led Bell to the invention of the telephone. Fascinated by Samuel Morse's telegraph, Bell set out to use what he knew about sound and speech to improve upon the idea of transmitting communication.

Bell began his research in 1874 and had financial backers who gave him the best business plan for bringing it to market. In 1877-78, the first telephone line was constructed, the first switchboard was created and the first telephone exchange was in operation. Three years later, almost 49,000 telephones were in use.

In this first telephone, sound waves caused an electric current to vary in intensity and frequency, causing a thin, soft iron plate–called the diaphragm–to vibrate. These vibrations were transferred magnetically to another wire connected to a diaphragm in another, distant instrument.

Telephones made it easier for businesses to communicate with each other. It cut down on the amount of time it took to send messages to each other. As the telephone network grew, it also expanded the area that a business could reach.
