A Dependent Student Verification Worksheet is sent to a student that resides with his or her parent(s) and is financially supported by the parent(s). An Independent Student Verification Worksheet is sent to a student that is not living with their parents or receiving any financial support.

During verification, the college financial aid administrator will ask the applicant to supply copies of documentation, such as income tax returns, W-2 statements and 1099 forms, to verify the data that was submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Some colleges will ask the family to complete a verification worksheet. Typical documentation might include the family's federal income tax returns and/or IRS tax return transcripts, proof of income documentation, and proof of high school completion such as a high school diploma or GED.

To complete FAFSA verification, families may be asked by a college financial aid office to send federal tax return transcripts. Families may also submit a signed copy of the necessary income tax return. Colleges may request proof of income, siblings' college registration forms or other supporting documentation.

Verification processing time is generally three to four weeks during peak season (June-October), and two to three weeks during non-peak season (November-May). Therefore, students should start the process as soon as possible.

Check the expected family contribution (EFC) line on your online FAFSA or Student Aid Report (SAR). If there is an asterisk next to it, you've been selected for verification. Don't take it personal.

Verification is a process initiated by the U.S. Department of Education, where the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is compared with the student (and parent/spouse) tax information and/or other financial documents that were submitted to the IRS.
