At the beginning of the age of dinosaurs (during the Triassic Period, about 230 million years ago), the continents were arranged together as a single supercontinent called Pangea.

The rock formations of eastern North America, Western Europe, and northwestern Africa were later found to have a common origin, and they overlapped in time with the presence of Gondwanaland. Together, these discoveries supported the existence of Pangea.

About 200 million years ago Pangaea broke into two new continents Laurasia and Gondwanaland. Laurasia was made of the present day continents of North America (Greenland), Europe, and Asia. Gondwanaland was made of the present day continents of Antarctica, Australia, South America.

Its name is derived from the Greek pangaia, meaning “all the Earth.”

The glacial deposits infer that Pangaea was a collection of landmasses of Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America. These landmasses have a glacial matter that was either connected to continents or was world ice.

Gondwana lasted for a particularly long time. It assembled hundreds of millions of years before Pangea.

Humans did not exist during the time of Pangea. Pangea formed between 300 million and 335 million years ago and began to break apart about 200 million years ago. So, Pangea broke up about 194 million years before the first ancestors of humans were on Earth.
