Guideline 10 provides guidance regarding factors affecting indoor environmental conditions acceptable to the comfort and health of human occupants.

Standards (ASHRAE Definition) describe uniform methods for testing, design and practice. They are developed by consensus procedures that include public review and comments. Standards are not mandatory but they should be considered as minimum design requirement.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standards 62.1 and 62.2 are the recognized standards for ventilation system design and acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ). Expanded and revised for 2022, both standards specify minimum ventilation rates and other measures in order to minimize adverse health effects for occupants.

It offers, in detail, the minimum energy efficiency requirements for design and construction of new sites and buildings and their systems, new portions of buildings and their systems, and new systems and equipment in existing buildings, as well as criteria for determining compliance with these requirements.

The ASHRAE 62.1 (“Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Residential Buildings”) recommends homes receive no less than 0.35 air changes per hour of outdoor air to ensure adequate indoor air. For other spaces like offices, shops, and schools, the ASHRAE 62.1 standard doesn't give a fixed number.

An intermittent local exhaust fan (minimum 50 CFM) in each bathroom and an intermittent local exhaust fan / range hood (minimum 100 CFM) in the kitchen.

7.2. Kitchen exhaust fans used to comply with Section 5.2 shall be rated for sound at a maximum of 3 sone at one or more airflow set- tings greater than or equal to 100 cfm (47 L/s). Exception: Fans with a minimum airflow setting exceed- ing 400 cfm (189 L/s) need not comply.

For warehouses, the ASHRAE minimum ventilation rate is 0.06 CFM per square foot. However, this is a minimum rate and must be adjusted based on occupancy rates, indoor air quality and other factors.
