The Allegheny woodrat is at the northern extent of its range in New York State. A decline in the numbers and range of the Allegheny woodrat was first noticed in the 1960s and the decline was considered severe by the mid-1970s. The species is believed to have been extirpated from the state by 1987.

CAUSES OF DECLINE a decline in acorns due to defoliation of oak trees by spongy moths which reduces the woodrats' winter food supply, parasitic raccoon roundworm infection, human disturbance ,and. habitat loss or alteration.

Three possible causes for population declines have been suggested for eastern woodrats: severe winter weather, predation, and poor acorn crops.

Woodrats are important to the nutrient-poor cave ecosystem because they bring organic material into the caves which supports a specialized cave invertebrate community.

The Allegheny woodrat is a small rodent (about the size of a squirrel) that resides in rock outcrops, boulder fields, abandoned mine portals, talus slopes, and caves from southern New York to Tennessee (Wood 2001).

The current population is estimated to be just over 100,000 individuals. Allegheny woodrats in the Great Smoky Mountains national park, Deam Nature Preserve in Indiana, and Falls Ridge have received some protection.
