The different types of irrigation include- sprinkler irrigation, surface irrigation, drip irrigation, sub-irrigation and manual irrigation.

Irrigation scheduling is essential for good water management and it deals with two classical questions related to irrigation. These are (1) how much to irrigate and (2) How often to irrigate. How often and how to irrigate is function of irrigation water needs of the crop.

The period during which it becomes necessary to carry out irrigation is called irrigation period. Its duration depends on the duration of vegetation of the species irrigated. The water quantity supplied per hectare of irrigated field over the irrigation period is called seasonal irrigation rate (depth).

FACTORS AFFECTING THE IRRIGATION INTERVAL soil texture • soil structure/water penetration • depth of effective root zone of the soil • the crop grown • the stage of development of the crop. All soils are composed of solid particles of various sizes, organic matter, and pore spaces that hold air and water.

IRRIGATION INTERVAL OR FREQUENCY This is the number of days between two consecutive irrigations, i = d ÷ ETc, where d is the net depth of irrigation application (dose) in millimeters and ETc is the daily crop evapotranspiration in millimetres per day.

Scheduling irrigation involves making a decision of how much water to apply and when. Three factors enter into the decision: water needs of the plants, water availability, and storing capacity of the soil around the roots.

Irrigation scheduling techniques can be based on soil water measurement, meteorological data or monitoring plant stress. Conventional scheduling methods are to measure soil water content or to calculate or measure evapotranspiration rates.
