Integer programming is NP hard because you can use it for SAT. We don't know if integer programming is harder than linear programming, because we don't know if P = NP or if P ≠ NP.

Since integer linear programming is NP-hard, many problem instances are intractable and so heuristic methods must be used instead. For example, tabu search can be used to search for solutions to ILPs.

Integer programming is the class of problems that can be expressed as the optimization of a linear function subject to a set of linear constraints over integer variables. It is in fact NP-hard.

LP problems have a convex set as their feasible region while IP problems have set of integer vectors as their feasible region (non-convex). Dealing with non-convex optimization problems are much harder than convex optimization problems.

An integer programming (IP) problem is a linear programming (LP) problem in which the decision variables are further constrained to take integer values. Both the objective function and the constraints must be linear. The most commonly used method for solving an IP is the method of branch-and–bound.

This means that it cannot understand the concept of integers. It is limited to continuous parameters with a linear relationship. This is the difference between linear programming (LP) and integer linear programming (ILP). In summary, LP solvers can only use real numbers and not integers as variables.

While the LP is solvable in polynomial time, ILP is NP-hard, i.e. there is no known algorithm which can solve it in polynomial time. Since the ILP solution space is not a convex set, we cannot use convex optimization techniques.

(real) Linear Programming can be solved in polynomial time, whereas Integer Linear Programming can be very easily reduced to from SAT, making it NP-hard (it can actually be shown to be NP complete, but this is less trivial).
