The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills. The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below, and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade.

The median AIME score is usually 5 or 6. Scoring 6+ indicates strong math knowledge. Team results often reflect the performance of the strong team members, especially in competitions like ARML where team has 15 members. As mentioned above, there are at least a few schools that pay attention to AIME scores.

Students taking the AMC 12 A, or AMC 12 B plus the AIME II need a USAMO index of 229.0 or higher to qualify for the USAMO. Students taking the AMC 10 A, or AMC 10 B plus the AIME I need a JMO index of 213.0 or higher to qualify for the JMO.

From each class, top 5% students will be eligible for Level 2 exam. Top 25 zone wise and class wise rank holders will also be eligible. Class toppers from each participating school where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam and score 50% qualifying marks.

There is no farther than USAMO qualification to begin with. Only about 250 students qualify nationally. Around 20 join for camp and 6 represent USA in IMO after gruelling one year long training and numerous interim tests. With that said, USAMO is basically national level competition for high schoolers.

The overall difficulty of the two competitions is similar, but the IMO has a significantly larger difficulty range: IMO 1/4s are easier than the easy USAMO problems while 3/6s are harder than the hardest USAMO problems.
