What is an abnormal hearing test result? An abnormal hearing test happens when your hearing tests don't have normal results. This doesn't always mean you have permanent hearing loss. Some types of hearing loss may get better on their own, and others can be treated or reversed.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) typically demonstrates a “knoch” on the audiogram at 4000k. If you have to raise your voice to be heard, (normal conversation is around 60dB) you are most likely in an environment with at least 80 dB of noise.

What's a normal hearing level on an audiogram? An adult is classified as having normal hearing ability if their responses indicate they heard noises between 0 and 25 dB across the frequency range.

Normal hearing: -10 to 20 dB. Mild hearing loss: 20 to 40 dB higher than normal. Moderate hearing loss: 40 to 70 dB higher than normal. Severe hearing loss: 70 to 90 dB higher than normal.

Two types of speech audiometry are usually performed: speech awareness or detection threshold (SAT or SDT) testing and speech reception threshold (SRT) testing. They provide different information, and therefore are both employed in most cases.

What does a normal audiogram look like? In fact, there are no normal audiograms as hearing ability differs from person to person. But in an audiogram that shows “normal hearing”, meaning no hearing loss, the ability to hear the different tones in the test should be under 25 dB at the different frequencies.

0 dB on an audiogram denotes the hearing threshold level regarded as the normal audiometric standard at that frequency (see EQUAL LOUDNESS CONTOURS).

The results of the hearing test are an indication for the degrees of hearing loss: Normal hearing: -10 to 20 dB. Mild hearing loss: 20 to 40 dB higher than normal. Moderate hearing loss: 40 to 70 dB higher than normal. Severe hearing loss: 70 to 90 dB higher than normal. Profound loss: 90 dB or more.
