WASHINGTON—When calculating federal income taxes, it makes absolutely no difference which spouse is listed first on a joint tax return.

You may enter either the middle initial or the full middle name. It is acceptable to use the Specifications for Filing Forms W-2 Electronically format for employee copies of the Form W-2 even though it may contain suffixes, middle names, etc.

Name — Enter your legally given name as shown on your income tax return. These names need to match the name entered earlier in this form on the "Address" tab. Business Name/Disregarded Entity Name — Unless you have a business name, trade name, or a disregarded entity name, leave this field empty.

If your tax return is rejected you can correct the middle initial and then re-submit. If accepted, you will be fine and you can correct it on next year's tax return. The IRS only verifies that the beginning letters of the last name and Date of Birth matches what the Social Security Administration has on file for you.

Call the IRS toll free at 800-829-1040 or make an appointment to visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC). The IRS will send your employer a letter requesting that they furnish you a corrected Form W-2 within ten days.

If you made a mistake on your tax return, you need to correct it with the IRS. To correct the error, you would need to file an amended return with the IRS. If you fail to correct the mistake, you may be charged penalties and interest. You can file the amended return yourself or have a professional prepare it for you.
