With individual adults, the therapist aims to help the client overcome the effects of negative early attachment difficulties by establishing a secure bond between the client and the therapist.

Phillip Shaver and Dr. Cindy Hazan found there to be four adult attachments styles: secure, anxious-preoccupied, fearful-avoidant, and dismissive-avoidant.

Bowlby identified four types of attachment styles: secure, anxious-ambivalent, disorganised and avoidant.

The Wave Attachment Style: This is Dr. Tatkin's version of anxious attachment. Children of addicts and mentally ill parents are often Waves because of the unpredictability that comes along with addiction and mental illness.

The goals of attachment-based psychotherapy are to address the limiting effects of negative early attachment experiences and to strengthen the capacity for secure relationships and adaptive actions in the world.

Attachment theory describes how our early relationships with a primary caregiver, most commonly a parent, creates our expectation for how love should be. Our view of ourself and others is molded by how well these caregivers were available and responsive to meet our physical and emotional needs.
