In Act II, Scene IV of Twelfth Night, Orsino continues to wallow in angst about Olivia. Viola/Cesario, in response to Orsino's questioning, makes veiled references to her own feelings for him. Feste, a member of Olivia's household, sings an ancient song about love and longing.

Later in the scene, Feste will appear and sing the song "Come away, Come away, death." The theme of this lyric is the sadness unto death of a young man whose love for a fair, cruel maid is unrequited. (The duke obviously sees a parallel between his and Lady Olivia's relationship in the song).

After listening to Feste sing a sad song about unrequited love, Orsino tells Cesario to visit Olivia again and persuade her to listen. Viola/Cesario argues that Orsino should accept that Olivia does not return his love, just as a woman who loved Orsino would have to accept that he did not love her.

Being once displayed, doth fall that very hour. Then let thy love be younger than thyself, Or thy affection cannot hold the bent. Being once displayed, doth fall that very hour.

Cesario responds that his father had a daughter, very similar to Cesario, who once loved a man just as much as Orsino loves Olivia. The girl never confessed her love but pined away with melancholy. Orsino asks if she died of love. Cesario avoids the question.

Now, the melancholy god protect thee, and the tailor make thy doublet of changeable taffeta, for thy mind is a very opal. I would have men of such constancy put to sea, that their business might be everything and their intent everywhere, for that's it that always makes a good voyage of nothing.

As the scene continues, Orsino's self-absorption becomes painfully clear through Shakespeare's use of dramatic irony as Viola professes her love for him and he totally misses her advances. (She is, in Orsino's defense, dressed as a male the entire time!)

Synopsis: At Orsino's court, Viola, disguised as a page and calling herself Cesario, has gained the trust of Orsino, who decides to send her to woo Olivia for him. Viola confides to the audience that she loves Orsino herself.
