The SEPSIS KILLS program has been incrementally introduced in NSW acute public health facilities since 2011. The program has raised sepsis awareness, improved care, and reduced preventable harm from sepsis in adults, children, mothers and babies across NSW.

When treatment or medical intervention is missing, sepsis is a leading cause of death, more significant than breast cancer, lung cancer, or heart attack. Research shows that the condition can kill an affected person in as little as 12 hours.

Intervention: A quality improvement program (SEPSIS KILLS) that promoted intervention within 60 minutes of recognition, including taking of blood cultures, measuring serum lactate levels, administration of intravenous antibiotics, and fluid resuscitation.

The eMR sepsis pathway is an electronic solution for alerting, escalation, diagnostics and prescribing to guide and support clinicians in the emergency and inpatient settings.
