Form 1040-A was a simplified version of Form 1040 used for filing individual income tax. Filers using 1040-A were required to have less than $100,000 in taxable income and not have exercised any incentive stock options during the year.

The new law consolidated forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ into one redesigned Form 1040 that all filers can use. For your 2019 taxes, which you file in early 2020, you will use this new 1040. That means you can no longer use the 1040A unless you are filing a return for the tax year 2017 or earlier.

After reporting your income, the 1040A form allows you to claim certain adjustments to arrive at your adjusted gross income. These include deductions for educator expenses, IRA contributions, student loan interest and tuition payments.

Form 1040A Eligibility Requirements Your taxable income was less than $100,000. Your income came only from wages, interest and dividends, capital gains distributions, taxable scholarships and grants, unemployment benefits, Alaska Permanent Fund dividends, pensions, annuities and IRAs.

The simplest IRS form is the Form 1040EZ. The 1040A covers several additional items not addressed by the EZ. And finally, the IRS Form 1040 should be used when itemizing deductions and reporting more complex investments and other income. Here are a few general guidelines on which form to use.

Form 1040 is the standard tax return form that most individual taxpayers use every year. The IRS no longer accepts Forms 1040-EZ or Form 1040-A for tax years 2018 and beyond, which means most taxpayers must use Form 1040 to complete their tax returns. The IRS consolidated everything into a single form.

Since these forms are virtually identical in function, the main reason to use Form 1040-SR is if you're filling out your tax return by hand rather than online. Form 1040-SR has larger type and larger boxes to write numbers in, making it slightly easier for seniors to read and fill out.
