Excuse from Service You have no means of transportation. You would have to travel an excessive distance to the courthouse. You have a physical or mental impairment. You provide care for a dependent and cannot afford to have someone cover for you. Serving would be an extreme financial burden.

A permanent medical excuse means a release from jury service granted by the court to a person with a disability whose condition is unlikely to resolve and who, with or without disability-related accommodations, including auxiliary aids or services, is not capable of performing jury service.

If you have been convicted of a felony or malfeasance in office and have not had your civil rights restored, you cannot serve as a juror. If you are unsure, contact the court where your proceeding was held or consult a legal professional. If you are/or will be serving as juror in any court.

In the event you were not able to appear on your scheduled summons date for jury service, you will need to contact our office via email or by phone in order to avoid receiving a Failure to Appear notice that can result in a fine, imprisonment or both, pursuant to C.C.P. 209.

(1) An applicant must submit to the jury commissioner a written request for permanent medical excuse with a supporting letter, memo, or note from a treating health care provider.

The warning will say that missing jury duty can be penalized with a fine. The second summons cannot be sent earlier than 90 days after the initial failure to appear. Appearing in court for the second summons can satisfy the juror's requirements. It can avoid further repercussions and penalties.

Do I have to perform jury service if I'm over 70 years of age? There is no age exemption for jury service. If you are 70 years of age or older, the California Rules of Court allow you to be excused due to a medical condition without a doctor's note.
