Thermal decomposition, or thermolysis, is a chemical process of breaking down caused by heat.

Mechanisms of thermal degradation of polymers Thermal degradation of polymers is a complex process that may involve random scission, depolymerization, and side group elimination leading to changes in polymer molecular weight and loss of useful properties, such as color, mechanical strength, and impact resistance.

Thermal degradation occurs when the polymer changes its properties under the influence of increased temperature. Initially, it causes the migration of low-molecular-weight additives in aging materials, if any are present.

It involves heating the waste in an inert atmosphere when the polymer degrades into small chain hydrocarbons as well as monomers. This generates (i) liquid products called pyrolytic oil; (ii) some gases and; (iii) a very small amount of solid carbonaceous residue called char (Singh and Ruj, 2016).

Thermal degradation of sugars may occur by two different major reaction pathways: the Maillard reaction, which takes place in the presence of amino acids, and caramelization, that occurs when simple sugars are heated at high temperatures (1,2).

The onset of thermal degradation dictates the maximum temperature at which a polymer can be used. It is an important limitation in how the polymer is manufactured and processed.

Oxidative degradation is an autocatalytic process of attack on the hydrogen atoms, to form hydroperoxides. The stability of polymers is thus inversely proportional to the number of hydrogen atoms with the carbon atoms present in the polymer chain. The degradation is catalyzed by heavy metals such as copper.
