An enlisted service member's IRR service ends after the completion of their mandatory service obligation (MSO), usually eight years. In the case of military retired personnel they can be recalled to active service up to age 60 if they had completed more than 20 years on active duty and are physically capable.

State National Guards can carry out a variety of duties in response to natural disasters and times of crisis, and that can include crowd control. They can also be armed for specific missions but can use their weapons in self-defense, just like all military personnel.

What is the National Guard? The National Guard is a unique element of the U.S. military that serves both community and country. The Guard responds to domestic emergencies, overseas combat missions, counterdrug efforts, reconstruction missions and more.

1 Complete your enlistment. Complete your enlistment. ... 2 Resign your post. Resign your post if you're a commissioned officer. ... 3 Write a letter. Write a letter to your commander requesting the transfer to the IRR. ... 4 Have your commander sign the Form 4187. ... 5 Continue drilling with your current unit.

Operationally controlled by the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, the IRR consists of a pool of individual soldiers who have been trained through their service in the active forces or the Selected Reserve, and are available to be called upon to mobilize during times of conflict or national emergency.

If one enlists in the active (drilling) National Guard or Reserves for six years, and then gets out, they are placed in the IRR for two years and are subject to possible recall during that time. The traditional enlistment contract calls for four years of active duty, but this can vary depending on a few factors.

The Guard responds to domestic emergencies, overseas combat missions, counterdrug efforts, reconstruction missions and more. However, the president can activate the National Guard and place it under federal control.

There Is No Simple Transfer Process It actually can take months to process. A reservist or guard member must first be released from their reserve status and basically apply to join the active duty ranks. That means finding a recruiter to assist you with the processing into the military (active).

If you earn at least 27 points a year, you can be eligible for promotion. You can get those extra points via correspondence courses, paid duty, or even unpaid duty. As long as you earn at least 50 points for your given retirement year, you get a good year.

Joining the Nation Guard in your state is always worth it because if you are a 17 year old still in high school as a Junior you can serve out two years of an 8 year MSO while in school and never go anywhere - deployment-wise. MSO= Military Service Obligation. Every branch of military has this.
