The Scheme is open to any NHS workers aged between 16 and 75 who are: Directly employed by the NHS. Medical, dental and ophthalmic practitioners and trainees.

You can continue to accrue pension benefits beyond age 65. You cannot accrue more than 45 calendar years' service or be pensionable beyond age 75. Working beyond age 65 will result in an enhancement to the benefits which were accrued up to 65.

Members who have deferred pension benefits in the 1995 and/or 2008 Section(s) who have had a break of more than five years may claim their deferred benefits, reduced for early payment, once they reach their minimum pension age without having to take a 24 hour break in their NHS employment.

If you are still in NHS employment you should contact your employer for a Retirement benefits claim form (AW8) which they can get from the Employer Hub. This includes if you opted out of the scheme, achieved maximum membership or maximum pensionable age but remained in NHS employment.

If you leave pensionable employment or have taken benefits from this Scheme, you can rejoin up to age 75.

1995 Section – Total Pensionable Pay is calculated by 'stepping back' 365 days from your last day of membership, which may result in it being partially calculated using an earlier pay rate. We would then take the previous 2 years pensionable pay and use the best of these last three years when calculating your pension.
