In most states, it's mandatory that dog owners have their pets licensed. If you get caught without a license, which can and does happen, you will be hit with a hefty fine. Dogs must have a renewed license each year, which must be displayed on them at all times.

Ohio law requires dogs to have a valid dog license. Many dogs are found each year wearing a valid dog license, but the address or phone number in our records is outdated. In order to aid in the return of dogs to their owners, the Auditor's office provides a found dog search feature.

The Denver Revised Municipal Code requires all dogs and cats 6 months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. All dogs and cats are required to be licensed within 30 days of being in the City. Pit bull breeds or any dog mixed with the pit bull breeds are illegal in Denver County and cannot be licensed.

All dogs and cats shall be deemed personal property and may be the subject of larceny and malicious or unlawful trespass. Owners, as defined in § 3.2-6500, may maintain any action for the killing of any such animals, or injury thereto, or unlawful detention or use thereof as in the case of other personal property.

Licensing is meant to facilitate reuniting you with your dog if he or she gets lost. If your dog is microchipped, you can apply for a lifetime license. This means you pay the county one time (currently $31.45 for a neutered or spayed dog vs. $6.45 annually), and your dog is licensed for his or her life.

All dogs four months of age or older must be licensed. Licenses are good for the calendar year in which they are issued and expire on December 31st.

There's no national law that requires dogs to be licensed; this is handled at the state or local level. Some states have license requirements, as do most county and municipal governments. Checking with your local government websites can tell you what type of licenses are required and how much they cost.

Most Lane County dog licenses can be purchased or renewed in person, online, through the mail, over the phone, or at a participating license vendor. For phone-in licenses, LCAS must already have your current rabies vaccination records on file.
