A. In Virginia, every teenager 14 or 15 years of age must have an employment certificate (work permit) to work at a job. The only exceptions to this requirement are listed below.

How many hours can a minor work in Virginia? Employees under the age of 16 can't work more than three hours a day on a school day, 18 hours a week in a school week, eight hours a day on a non-school day or 40 hours a week in a non-school week.

Work Permits Go to Virginia Department of Labor. Click on Youth Registration. Complete the Youth Application. Provide your Youth Unique Identifier code to your parents and perspective employer. Parents complete the Parent/Guardian Registration.
