Goal-line technology will be used in the forthcoming playoffs, the English Football League has announced. The Hawkeye technology will be used in all games in the Championship, League One and League Two end-of-season showpieces, having been deployed in the regular Championship campaign which has just ended.

The Premier League first began work with Hawk-Eye in 2006 when it was given permission by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to test the system in any non-competitive environment, and during the 2006/07 season an initial camera-based system was tested at Fulham's Craven Cottage stadium.

Goal-line technology or GLT is the use of technology to determine if the ball has crossed the goal line or not. This information is transmitted within a split second to a special watch worn by the referee to ensure immediate response and that there are no stoppages or other forms of interference in the game.

Hawk-Eye uses a pair of seven high speed cameras focusing on both goal posts to triangulate and track the ball's precise position on the field. When the ball crosses the goal line it automatically alerts the referees.

Goal-line technology is currently used in the top European domestic leagues, and at major international competitions such as, since 2014, the Men's and Women's FIFA World Cups.

A computer tracks the position of the ball via the sensor and detects when the ball crosses the goalline. Another camera-based system, Goalminder uses high-speed cameras built into the goal posts and crossbar to deliver visual evidence only to the referee, leaving it to the judgement of the officials.
