In 1996, the UK's first National Cycling Strategy (NCS) was launched with the aim 'to increase cycle use' (DoT, 1996a: 4). Its central target was to 'double the number of trips by cycle (on 1996 figures) by end 2002 and quadruple the number of trips by cycle (on 1996 figures) by end of 2012' (ibid).

The Whitehorse Cycling Strategy 2016 has a vision of increasing cycling through a connected network of attractive, safe and inviting low stress streets and paths that are accessible to all and respects the needs of all users. Increase awareness of the principles of the strategy within Council and the wider community.

In 2012, the City of Copenhagen adopted a new cycling strategy for 2025 with a goal of increasing the modal share of bicycles to 50% of commuter trips and reducing serious injuries by 70%.

The second cycling and walking investment strategy ( CWIS2 ) outlines the government's ambition to make cycling and walking the natural choices for shorter journeys, or as part of a longer journey by 2040.

The Victorian Cycling Strategy 2019-2028 prioritises SCCs for investment to deliver safer, more direct cycling into and across Melbourne and Victoria. The SCC network supports the needs of commuter trips (to work or education) and other important trips, such as to stations, shops or schools.

Bicycle Network Membership provides bike riders with support through benefits including insurance and enables them to contribute to improving conditions for bike riders. Membership of Bicycle Network is open to the public and is subscription-based. Membership is a source of income for the organisation.
