Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) provides an evidence-based foundation to empower people with diabetes to navigate self-management decisions and activities. 1. DSMES is a cost-effective tool proven to help improve health behaviors and health outcomes for people with diabetes.

It assesses the extent to which respondents are confident they can manage their blood sugar, diet, and level of exercise. Responses are rated on a 5 point scale ranging from ''can't do at all'' to ''certain can do'' (1, 5). In this scale, higher scores indicate higher self-efficacy in perform- ing DSM activities.

The DKQ is a 24-item questionnaire, designed by Starr County Diabetes Education Study,11 to elicit information about patients' understanding of the cause of their disease, its associated complications, blood glucose levels, diet, and physical activity.

The SDSCA questionnaire is a brief yet reliable and valid self-report measure of diabetes self-management that is useful both for research and practice. The revised version and its scoring are presented, and the inclusion of this measure in studies of diabetes self-management is recommended when appropriate.

The Self-Efficacy for Diabetes Scale is a self-report instrument containing eight items that ask individuals how confident they feel in doing specific activities related to their diabetes. This instrument is designed to be completed by the individual diagnosed with diabetes.

The DSMQ was developed at the Research Institute of the Diabetes Academy Mergentheim. It is the first German instrument targeting diabetes self-care, and was designed to assess behaviours associated with metabolic control within common treatment regimens for type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adult patients.

Responses are rated on a 5 point scale ranging from ''can't do at all'' to ''certain can do'' (1, 5). In this scale, higher scores indicate higher self-efficacy in perform- ing DSM activities.

Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ) One point is awarded for each correct option, whereas, no point or negative scoring for the incorrect option. Its scoring involves summing-up the points obtained by each participant. A higher score represents better disease knowledge.
