If the total capacity of your aboveground containers is over 1,320 gallons or the total capacity of your completely buried tanks is over 42,000 gallons, then your facility is subject to the SPCC rule and you must develop a Plan.

Protected Aboveground Tank: A listed tank system consisting of a primary tank provided with protection from physical damage and fire resistive protection from a high intensity liquid pool fire exposure.

What Are Aboveground Storage Tanks? Aboveground storage tanks are large containers that rest on the ground's surface. They're designed to hold a variety of liquid or gaseous substances in bulk quantities, such as water, petroleum, gasoline, chemicals, and hazardous waste materials.

The SPCC rule requires facility owners or operators with more than 1,320 gallons of above-ground oil storage capacity or 42,000 gallons of underground oil storage capacity to have a written plan that addresses how the facility will prevent oil spills to navigable waters and adjoining shorelines.

The SPCC Rule applies to facilities that: Have an aboveground oil storage capacity of 1,320 U.S. gallons or more in containers which are 55 gallons or greater, or a completely buried oil storage capacity of 42,000 U.S. gallons or greater; and.

OSHA 1910.106 (b)(2)(ii)(a) requires a minimum separation of three feet for flammable storage tanks. Tanks should not be closer than 25 feet from any building, per best practice recommendations followed by West Bend Mutual Insurance Company.
