The mummy is that of an Enid, Oklahoma drifter named David E. George who took his own life in 1903. After his death, a local resident claimed that, three years earlier, George had confessed to being John Wilkes Booth. The local undertaker embalmed the body and it was a local attraction in Enid.

Booth held his bloody knife over his head and yelled something to the audience. While it is traditionally held that Booth shouted the Virginia state motto, Sic semper tyrannis! ("Thus always to tyrants") either from the box or the stage, witness accounts conflict. Most recalled hearing Sic semper tyrannis!

Many Granbury old-timers believe, and longstanding local tradition says that John St. Helen was in fact John Wilkes Booth, President Abraham Lincoln's assassin. History says that John Wilkes Booth was shot and killed at Garrett's farm in Virginia shortly after Lincoln's assassination.

John Wilkes Booth died three hours later. His last words were spoken while looking at his hands. “Useless, useless, useless.” He is buried in an unmarked grave at the family plot in Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.

In the pandemonium, a soldier named Boston Corbett fired into the barn and hit Booth in the neck, mortally wounding him. Corbett would later claim Booth had raised his pistol to shoot at the troops. After being dragged out of the barn, Booth stared at his bloody hands and uttered “useless, useless.” He died at sunrise.

After he assassinated Lincoln and jumped out of the box to the stage, Booth shouted the Latin phrase “sic semper tyrannis,” meaning “thus always to tyrants,” a yet shorter version of “thus always I bring death to tyrants” (sic semper evello mortem tyrannis).

After several attempts, Lincoln's assassin spoke: “Tell mother, I die for my country.” Conger wanted desperately to confirm the accuracy of what Booth had said. These might be the assassin's historic last words, and they must be reported to the nation exactly as Booth said them.

In this 309-page book, Bates claimed that John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, was not killed by Union Army Soldiers on April 26, 1865, but successfully eluded capture altogether, and lived for many years thereafter under a series of assumed names, notably John St. Helen and David E.
