VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — During the 2019-2020 school year, 14 more public schools in Virginia Beach will make the move to full-day kindergarten. It's part of a multiyear plan to transition all Virginia Beach City Public Schools elementary schools from half-day to full-day kindergarten.

Age-Eligible Children Districts must admit children at the beginning of the school year (or whenever they move into a district) if they will be five years of age on or before September 1 (EC Section 48000[a]).

Virginia compulsory education laws require children between five and 18 to attend school, while non-compliance is charged as a Class 3 misdemeanor.

Virginia law states that parents must ensure a child attends school, if he or she will be five years old on or before September 30. However, if, in your opinion as a parent, your child is not mentally, physically, or emotionally prepared to attend school, he or she may be exempted for that year.

Virginia's compulsory attendance law (§22.1-254, subsection A) states that all children who are 5 years old on or before September 30 of the school year must attend school. This could include public school, private school, a public or private preschool program, a private tutor, or home instruction.
