2.1 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) are documents prepared by the manufactures/ suppliers of the chemicals and contain information on physical and chemical properties of the material, potential hazards of the material and how to work safely with these materials.

They must be written in English and contain: the name of the chemical (same as on the label) the chemical and common names of the substance. a listing of the ingredients. a statement of the ingredients that are known carcinogens or that present other known hazards. any specific hazards.

Employers must make sure that all controlled products have an up-to-date (less than three years old) MSDS when it enters the workplace. The MSDSs must be readily available to the workers who are exposed to the controlled product and to the health and safety committee or representative.

OSHA mandates that SDS must be provided to employees working with hazardous materials. OSHA does not tell us how to provide SDS to employees, so you can print a book or provide them digitally, as long as the employee has access throughout the workday, and each employee has been provided training on how to access them.

To obtain SDS, get them from the manufacturer. They may be sent with the chemical order (paper copy or e-mail attachment). Otherwise, go to the manufacturer's website and download it or request a copy.

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely with the chemical product.

1. MSDS sheets must be written in: OSHA Form 174 format.

While there is no specified format for the MSDS, OSHA has developed a non-mandatory format, OSHA Form 174, which may be used by chemical manufacturers and importers to comply with OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard.
