When you request a hardship withdrawal, it can take 7 to 10 days on average to receive the money. Usually, your 401(k) money is tied up in mutual funds, and the custodian must sell your share percentage of securities held in these investments.

To make a 401(k) hardship withdrawal, you will need to contact your employer and plan administrator and request the withdrawal. The administrator will likely require you to provide evidence of the hardship, such as medical bills or a notice of eviction.

401(k) plans A hardship withdrawal allows the owner of a 401(k) plan or a similar retirement plan (such as a 403(b)) to withdraw money from the account to meet a dire financial need. Hardship withdrawals are treated as taxable income and may be subject to an additional 10 percent tax (and usually are).

In most cases, the loan amount will be limited to $50,000 (or 50% of your balance), and you'll need to repay the money within five years at a low interest rate. If you leave your job before paying back the loan, you'll have until Tax Day of the subsequent year to repay the entire loan.

To be eligible for a hardship withdrawal, you must have an immediate and heavy financial need that cannot be fulfilled by any other reasonably available assets. This includes other liquid investments, savings, and other distributions you are eligible to take from your 401(k) plan.

Allow three (3) business days from the start date selected for your withdrawal to be posted in your bank account.

A hardship withdrawal can take 7-10 business days, which includes a review of your withdrawal application.

An unforeseeable emergency, is defined by the IRS as a severe financial hardship of the participant resulting from certain specific events-- see the list of situations described on the right for more information. In these circumstances your 457(b) plan may permit a withdrawl.
