PG&E changes its natural gas rates every month, as required by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). This is done to better reflect competitive monthly gas market costs.

Why did PG&E increase rates? PG&E has announced that it is making several changes to ensure the safety and reliability of its services including big investments in undergrounding electric lines to decrease wildfire risk. These upgrades and recent inflation are the main reasons PG&E increased their rates this year.

The CPUC must approve* all rates that each electric utility charges its customers. Once a utility's revenue requirement has been determined, a utility must propose what rate will be charged to customers in order to recover the revenue requirement. Rates are set in formal CPUC proceedings called ratemaking proceedings.

Rule 14 describes the procedures put in place when Pacific Gas and Electric Company must interrupt or reduce natural gas service to customers for operational or regulatory reasons. Interruptions may be due to actual or anticipated supply or capacity shortages.

The California Public Utilities Commission approved a PG&E rate hike Thursday that will add about $5 a month to the average bill and it could begin as soon as next month. Kris Sanchez reports.
