Acquiring Belizean Citizenship U.S. citizens can become citizens of Belize. The waiting period varies; for those married to a Belizean citizen it is normally 1 year of residency, and for others it is normally 5 years of residency.

Belize offers two types of Residence status, Permanent Residence and Temporary Residence. Permanent Residence is for persons who want to make Belize their home and will be staying in country for long period of time.

Visa and Residency Options for Expats in Belize As a citizen of the U.S. or Canada you can stay in Belize for up to one month without a visa. If you want to stay longer you'll need to go to the immigration office for an updated visitor's permit or tourist stamp.

Entry and residence requirements If you wish to reside in Belize, you should apply for permanent residence after legally residing in the country for a minimum of one year; or if you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply to enrol in the Qualified Retired Person programme.

British nationals do not need a visa to enter Belize. On arrival, you'll be allowed to enter for one month. Any extension to remain in the country will incur a fee of BZD$200 for each month's extension.

Once you have been a permanent resident of Belize for at least five years, you may qualify for Citizenship by Registration. To qualify, during those five years, you cannot have spent more than 30 consecutive days out of the country, nor accumulated more than three months out of the country in any given 12-month period.
