Lead-based paints were banned for residential use in 1978. Homes built in the U.S. before 1978 are likely to have some lead-based paint. When the paint peels and cracks, it makes lead paint chips and dust.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed AB 100 into law, requiring lead-free endpoint plumbing devices to meet a performance standard, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61-2020, and preventing the sale in California of endpoint devices that leach more than 1 μg/L of lead.

One of the most common sources of lead exposure is from lead-based paint, which was widely used in residential housing throughout the last century. But due to growing evidence about the dangers of lead, the use of lead paint was eventually banned more than 40 years ago.

Although lead-based paint was banned for residential use in the United States in 1978, it is still present in millions of homes in California and continues to be the leading cause of childhood lead poisoning in the state. All homes built before 1978 are presumed to contain lead paint.

The Indian government issued notification under the wider umbrella of Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986, to set a limit of 90ppm content of lead in paint, but there is a catch, which is it left it to paint companies to “self-certify” their product as lead-free, which serves as one of the drawbacks of regulation.

​​Definition of "Lead-Contaminated Dust" - UPDATED The new definition found at Title 17 of the CCR Section 35035 lowers the standard for interior floor surfaces from 40 micrograms (µg) of lead in dust per square foot (ft2) to 10 µg/ft2, and for interior horizontal surfaces from 250 µg/ft2 to 100 µg/ft2.
