In three-phase auto-reclosing a faulted line trips as per a multi-phase fault and auto-reclosing is performed on the condition that there is a system interconnection between the two terminals of the healthy line.

Most faults on power lines occur as a result of a fuse blowing, tree branch contact, equipment failure, or lightning. Often, reclosers will open the circuit and retry the closing operation when a fault occurs. Unlike fuses, a recloser can isolate the fault and deliver energy to burn it off.

Reclosers exploit the statistical distribution of fault types to improve reliability. 80% of faults are temporary, such as foreign objects coming into contact with powerlines or lightning strikes. The recloser detects these faults and trips, but then rapidly recloses to restore power.

Circuit breakers are mounted near the ground level, making maintenance relatively convenient. Reclosers are usually mounted high on the power pole, so that any possible maintenance requires a boom truck and special procedures due to proximity to high voltages.

Three-phase reclosers are used on three-phase circuits to improve system reliability and where lockout of all three phases is required for any permanent fault, to prevent single phasing of three-phase loads such as large three-phase motors.

Their function is to automatically disconnect a section of feeder in the event of fault, such as a short circuit. After a certain period of time, the recloser makes a specified number of attempts to re-energize the line to restore power supply to consumers.
