Giving you medications that reduce pain and fever prior to your IVIG – These may include acetaminophen (sample brand name: Tylenol); a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug or "NSAID" such as ibuprofen (sample brand names: Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (sample brand name: Aleve); or steroids.

Immunoglobulin is made from blood donations. Several thousand blood donations are pooled in the process. For these reasons there is always a possibility of catching an infection from one of the blood donors. No one has ever caught HIV or hepatitis B from immunoglobulin therapy.

Infusions are started at a rate of 0.5 to 1 mL/kg/hour for the first 15 to 30 minutes, and if no adverse reaction occurs, then the rate can be increased subsequently every 15 to 30 minutes to a maximum of 3 to 6 mL/kg/hour.

Q: Does treatment with IVIG require any pretesting and/or premedication? A: Yes, before treatment with IVIG, IgA level is checked to ensure patient is not IgA deficient. Prior to treatment, patients are usually pre-medicated with acetaminophen 650 to 1000 mg, diphenhydramine 50 mg.

IVIG is given as an intravenous infusion (through the vein in the arm), which takes several hours to complete. Frequency of infusions vary ing to the patient's need. It may be given as a one-time infusion (such as for Kawasaki's disease).
