Muscle force is generated by myosin crossbridges interacting with actin. As estimated from stiffness and equatorial X-ray diffraction of muscle and muscle fibres, most myosin crossbridges are attached to actin during isometric contraction, but a much smaller fraction is bound stereospecifically.

The relation between the force (load) and the velocity of shortening (V) in contracting skeletal muscle is part of a rectangular hyperbola: (P + a) V = b(Po − P); where Po is the maximum isometric force and a and b are constants.

Your nervous system (brain and nerves) sends a message to activate your skeletal (voluntary) muscles. Your muscle fibers contract (tense up) in response to the message. When the muscle activates or bunches up, it pulls on the tendon. Tendons attach muscles to bones.

Answer and Explanation: The change in whole-muscle force is achieved in vivo by recruiting more motor units. This allows for the total muscle force to be produced. This process in involves several muscle fibres that undergo depolarization.

Skeletal muscle adapts to endurance excerise, such as long distance running, with an increase in the capacity for aerobic metabolism. This is reflected in an increased capacity of whole homogenates and of the mitochondrial fraction of muscle to oxidize pyruvate and long chain fatty acids.

With increasing rates of descending pathway activity, intermediate-size alpha motor neurons are activated in addition to the small neurons. Because more motor units are activated, the muscle produces more force.

A consistent feature of age and inactivity is limb muscle atrophy and the loss of peak force and power. Differences exist in the rate and mechanisms of muscle wasting and in the susceptibility of a given fiber type to atrophy.

Skeletal muscles consist of flexible muscle fibers that range from less than half an inch to just over three inches in diameter. These fibers usually span the length of the muscle. The fibers contract (tighten), which allows the muscles to move bones so you can perform lots of different movements.
