The Fraser River Estuary Management Program (FREMP) is an intergovern- mental partnership among federal, provincial, and regional governments and port authorities to coordinate planning and decision-making in the Fraser River estuary. In 1994, FREMP adopted the Fraser River Estuary Management Plan (EMP).

The US Army Corps of Engineers routinely creates value from dredged sediments though beneficial uses such as beach nourishment, enhancing wetland habitat, and brownfield reconstruction.

Most of the dredged material disposed of in open water of the Great Lakes is not contaminated and can be used instead to enhance beaches, stabilize shorelines, or create or enhance habitat.

Many new land areas within ports and harbors utilize dredged material to create new land regions. Landfill Caps and Covers: Dredged material can be utilized as a source for landfill covers, road construction slope soils and as cap material for sediment cleanup projects of contaminated material.

Maintaining existing waterways: Dredging is an important step in waterway maintenance. By removing the accumulated debris, dredging can restore the waterway to its original depth and condition. Dredging also removes dead vegetation, pollutants and trash that have gathered in these areas.

Management of dredged material In general, dredged material may be disposed: at a permitted solid waste facility. through permitted on-site disposal. by use or reuse for a beneficial purpose, including fill.

Dredged material can be used to make the pits shallower and thus eliminate anoxia and improve ecological conditions. There are several ways in which dredged material can be used in flood and coastal protection schemes. Examples are as follows: • Beach nourishment and the direct replacement of eroded beach material.

The process of dredging consists of the following stages: - Excavation (loosening or dislodging) of the material from the bottom. - Removal of the loosened material to the dredge vessel. - Transportation of the material to the placement area.
