A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a courtesy examination of your boat (vessel) to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Examinations are not a boarding or law enforcement issue.

What is a Coast Guard inspected vessel? An Inspected Vessel is one inspected by the Coast Guard and that has been issued a Certificate of Inspection. Vessels require a USCG inspection when they're carrying more than six paying passengers.

A Vessel Safety Check is an inspection of your boat performed with you and a volunteer member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The primary goal of a safety inspection is to discuss with you required safety equipment and safety features specific to your boat. Results of the Safety Check are not reported to anyone.

Boats under 16 feet must have flares or nighttime signals. Boats over 16 feet must carry visual signals for both day and night use. Examples of pyrotechnic devices or flares that would qualify are orange or white smoke and aerial light flares.

Now what does Coast Guard certified mean? Some commercial vessels are required by law to be inspected by the US Coast Guard. If they pass the inspection they are given a certificate of inspection which the owner must then post in a place where it can be seen by passengers. This is Coast Guard Certification.

They will mostly be checking to be sure you boat is safe. This means they will be looking at your emergency equipment, radios, life jackets, alarms, bilges, and everything else you need to keep well-maintained for a safe boat trip.

Before every voyage, take a minute to inspect all belts and hoses; replace any that are torn or show signs of excessive wear. Inspect all fluid levels, oil levels, and the condition of your battery before every voyage.

(a) Annual inspection. Your vessel must undergo an annual inspection within 3 months before or after each anniversary date, except as specified in paragraph (b) of this section. (1) You must contact the cognizant OCMI to schedule an inspection at a time and place which he or she approves.
