DNS TTL (time to live) is a setting that tells the DNS resolver how long to cache a query before requesting a new one. The information gathered is then stored in the cache of the recursive or local resolver for the TTL before it reaches back out to collect new, updated details.

A pointer (PTR) record resolves an IP address (made up of numbers and decimals) into a domain name (such as okta.com). The act of translating an IP address into a domain name is known as a reverse lookup in the Domain Name System (DNS).

A DNS pointer record (PTR for short) provides the domain name associated with an IP address. A DNS PTR record is exactly the opposite of the 'A' record, which provides the IP address associated with a domain name. DNS PTR records are used in reverse DNS lookups.

Time To Live (TTL) The TTL is a value in a DNS record that determines the number of seconds before subsequent changes to the record go into effect. Each of your domain's DNS records, such as an MX record, CNAME record, and so on, has a TTL value.

To create a PTR Record, complete the following: From the Cloud Services Portal, click Manage -> DNS -> Zones. Click the DNS view. Click the zone. Click Create -> Record and select PTR Record from the drop-down list. On the Create PTR Record page, select or specify the following: Click Save & Close to save.

The reverse DNS record (rDNS) is also known as the PTR record, pointer record, or IP resolver. A PTR is a reverse record for an IP address that allows an IP to map to a domain and vice versa.

While A record maps the domain name to an IP address, the PTR record maps the IP address to a hostname. So, the PTR record ensures that your IP address officially connects to your host. Configuring the PTR record is essential if you're using both internal or external mail servers.

How to lookup PTR records on Windows Open a command prompt by navigating to Start → 'Type here to search' → 'cmd' → Open. Type nslookup -q=ptr example.com and hit [enter] to get the PTR records for example.com . The PTR records are listed below the Non-authoritative answer heading.
