To apply for an assumed name certificate the business owner must fill out a form. This form can be obtained from our office in person or by mail. The fee for filing for this certificate is $5.00.

The Clerk's office registers business names known as "assumed names" (or DBA) for new businesses in ance with Illinois law. An assumed name is issued to any business entity that uses a name other than the name(s) of the individual(s) who own or operate the business.

It expires on the first day of the anniversary month of your filing date, in the next year that is evenly divisible by five. After that, the DBA can be renewed in five-year increments. The fee for a five-year DBA registration or renewal is $150.

Under Illinois law, all businesses are required to register alternative trade names by filing for a DBA if the business seeks to operate under a different name than the name used when it was formed. In the case of a sole proprietorship, any name different than the owner's legal name requires registration.

Fees. $200 ($150 Filing Fee, $50 expedited fee) Domestic or Foreign Business Corporation – Expedited (24 Hour) Service. Please note that 24 hour expedited service excludes weekends and holidays. Payment must be in the form of a credit card — Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express.

The Illinois Assumed Business Name Act requires a business to use an assumed name in a business as long as the full legal name of the business (corporation or LLC) is also shown in the name. (805 ILCS 5/4.15) The purpose of this law is to prevent fraud on consumers or other businesses.

The right to use an assumed name is effective from the date the application is filed by the Secretary of State's office until the first day of the company's anniversary month in the next calendar year evenly divisible by five. The assumed name is renewed for a period of five-years.
