Tuscaloosa was primarily Creek and Choctaw land. Chickasaw and Cherokee tribes have also been prominent in the region.

It was known as Tuskaloosa until the early 20th century. It is also known as "the Druid City" because of the numerous water oaks planted in its downtown streets since the 1840s.... Tuscaloosa, AlabamaWebsitewww.tuscaloosa.com34 more rows

In honor of the legendary "Black Warrior," a great chief who had had a fateful encounter with explorer Hernando DeSoto centuries before somewhere in Southwest Alabama, the settlers named the place Tuscaloosa (from the Choctaw words "tushka" meaning warrior and "lusa" meaning black).

But in 1818, it officially became Tuscaloosa, although spelled with a K instead of C until the early 20th century. The city of Tuskaloosa, at the falls of the Black Warrior River, was incorporated Dec. 13, 1819, one day before the U.S. Congress admitted Alabama as a state. Tuscaloosa County was established in 1818.

Tuscaloosa was known as "The Oak City" and "The Druid City" (after an ancient Celtic people who worshipped oaks) in its early years because huge water oak trees lined the downtown streets. The city of Tuscaloosa is now the hub for West Alabama industry and commerce, anchored by the sprawling nearby Mercedes-Benz plant.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is best-known for one thing: It's the home of The University of Alabama and its football team.

Founded in 1816 by Thomas York on land opened to settlement after the Creek War, it was named for the Choctaw chief Tuscaloosa (“Black Warrior”), who fought the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540. The city served as the state capital (1826–46) and was partially burned (April 1865) during the American Civil War.
