Depending on the terms of the contract, 2 to 6 years are spent on active duty and the rest spent in the Coast Guard Reserves.

a. FOR ALL ENLISTEES: If this is my initial enlistment, I must serve a total of eight (8) years, unless I am sooner discharged or otherwise extended by the appropriate authority. This eight year service requirement is called the Military Service Obligation.

A Statement of Service Letter (SOSL) is a written document certifying that the servicemember is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service under honorable conditions no later than 120 days from the date the letter is signed.
