remembering that lice is a common childhood condition and it is NOT life-threatening. You need to inform your child's school nurse, as she will take the responsibility for the school management and provide you with information and advice for treating the lice, removing nits, and preventing re-occurence.

So if you look on the scalp and see no visible adult lice and several small nits, it's likely that you've caught lice in the earlier stages and had them for less than 2 weeks. Nits and nymphs: 1.5 to 2 weeks. If you see nits and small, moving lice, you've likely had lice for 1.5 to 2 weeks.

A head lice diagnosis is neither a health hazard nor a sign of poor hygiene, and children should not miss school because of it, new guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics states. Instead, being sent home from school because of head lice "can result in significant stigma and psychological stress."

Children diagnosed with live head lice do not need to be sent home early from school; they can go home at the end of the day, be treated, and return to class after appropriate treatment has begun. Nits may persist after treatment, but successful treatment should kill crawling lice.

But, many schools don't do line checks anymore because they lack the resources. Therefore, detection starts at home and it's up to parents to be aware.

Pediculosis (“head-lice”) is categorized under New Jersey State law as a communicable disease (N.J.A.C. 10:122-7.1). In order to prevent the spread of head-lice any student(s) identified as having this communicable disease shall be excluded from school until the student exhibits no evidence of live lice or eggs (nits).

1. Place the patient in Contact Isolation until 24 hours after initial treatment. 2. A gown and gloves are required.

Clothes, bedding, and towels used by a person with head lice two days before treatment should be washed in hot water and dried on the hot cycle to kill any lice. Other items that cannot be washed or dry-cleaned can be placed in a sealed plastic bag for two weeks to kill any lice or nits on those items.
