A water backflow prevention device is a device that works to protect potable water from contamination or pollution due to backflow. In layman's terms, it's essentially a device that stops water from flowing backward in your pipes.

We have a 40-hour USC program, which includes a pass / fail practical and written examination. Once you pass our course, you receive a tester's certification diploma. This may be accepted on its own in some applications, or used as a pre-requisite to a third party exam (AWWA, ABPA, ASSE, etc).

The three classes of backflow risk are low, medium or high as per AS/NZS 3500.1:2015. Low Risk – where the water supply system poses a nuisance but does not endanger health or cause injury. Medium Risk – where the water supply system could endanger health. High Risk – where the water supply system could cause death.

The backflow prevention device or assembly must be installed when required to prevent cross- connections. A plumbing system must be installed to preclude backflow of a solid, liquid or gas contaminant into the water supply system.

The Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) and the Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly (RPZA) are the most used backflow preventers for fire protection systems, but I will discuss all the most common backflow preventers used in plumbing systems.

As the name implies, a backflow preventer is a mechanical device that is installed in a plumbing system to prevent contaminated water from flowing backwards into the system.

RP's must be installed above ground. Backflow preventers installed inside must be a minimum distance of twelve (12) inches above the floor, and no higher than four (4) foot above the floor, with adequate clearance around the backflow preventer for testing and/or repair.

Backwater sanitary valves (also known as "check valves" or "backwater valves") are also often referred to as "backflow preventers" They are intended to prevent backflow of sewage on the sanitary sewer line during a flood or sewer blockage, and have no connection with potable water.
